The 3 things you HAVE TO know about Wrong Fuel!

AdBlue In Your Diesel

In County Durham we are discovering increasingly more occurrences of AdBlue contamination whereby a driver has poured AdBlue right into their diesel fuel tank. This is mostly thanks to people not being totally sure the way to work with it (important: it's not a fuel additive), and partially due to the fact that the inlets for diesel and AdBlue are usually directly near to each other on the car.

Now, exactly what is the trouble with having AdBlue in a diesel car?

Since the product is primarily deionised water, it is nearly as good as putting water into your tank. Diesel and water tend not to mix whatsoever and trying to run a diesel car on water is not going to work. In addition to this, the urea is extremely corrosive to fuel system hoses and seals and is prone to crystallisation, blocking injectors and filters. If you find you have put AdBlue in the fuel tank drain it right away. And most definitely be careful not to start up the engine - not even to move it from the pump. In cases where you have started the car you may likely have to have the whole fuel system purged and fuel filters changed.

Call us if it turns out you are a casualty of AdBlue contamination. We can help you. We are Contaminated Fuel Specialists and will fix all types of AdBlue liquid contamination.

Waste Fuel Removal

Have a fuel reservoir placed at the back of your garden containing aged, useless or degraded fuel? We could help you to dispose of it. We have been called out to numerous private and business premises in County Durham to deal with removing and disposing of fuel storages. We are licenced by the Environment Agency to be able to extract and dispose of waste fuel legally and safely.

Irrespective of whether the fuel storage is a subterranean reservoir, a mobile bowser, or perhaps several containers in a storage shed, providing we can get to it, we could certainly empty it for you.

Wrong Fuel Doctor Ouston - Fuel Rescue Ouston

This was what we call the graveyard shift. It was close to 2:30am and almost noone was about. It had been pretty dead up to now, and me and Ray were sitting around perusing several old articles. That was a rare restful time in County Durham. Actually it was that calm that the moment my mobile rang I jumped with surprise! The customer explained: "I've only just finished my overnight shift and stupidly filled petrol in my diesel clean white Land Rover Range Rover Sport". We instructed him to let us know where exactly he was located and we set off, ending up in Ouston only an hour or so later. The wrong fuel was cleared from the motor and he thanked us profusely for showing up so fast. While we were returning home we saw two women on the side of the road who appeared to have a flat. So we got out to change it, to their delight.

How to find out if I put the wrong fuel in my car?

If you’ve just filled up at a petrol station and the cars starts to act a bit strange you might start to wonder if you accidentally put the wrong fuel in it.

Well, there are a few things to can check that will be able to tell you:

  1. How is the car responding? There are some very common misfuel symptoms which can be a good indicator of wrong fuel:
    • Loss of engine power – can feel like the car has run out of fuel
    • A lot of smoke (more than usual)
    • Engine coughing or starting to splutter
    • Won’t start – or keeps stalling.
  2. Look at your fuel receipt. It will state clearly if you filled up with diesel or unleaded. If you don’t have the receipt, you can often return to the petrol station where you filled up and give them the date and time (and pump) where you refueled and they will often be able to give you a VA receipt.
  3. Smell it. Diesel and petrol have very distinctly different smells. Anyone familiar with the motor industry should be able to help you with this. Or you could even get another car to park alongside and smell the fuel caps of both, comparing them to determine what the fuel type is.
  4. Call us to come out and assess the car. In the majority of cases we will be able to tell if the car has been misfueled before beginning work on it. If we discover that the vehicle does not need a fuel drain, you will only be charged a call-out fee.
